Clare turn on scoring style after three red cards trip up Tipp

Clare 1-23 Tipperary 0-12
Drama and cards aplenty in Ennis last night as Clare cruised into the penultimate round of the Munster MHC. Impressive as their second-half showing may have been, Clare’s comprehensive victory stemmed largely from the three red cards shown to Tipperary’s Willie Connors, Tommy Nolan and Chris McCullagh. Of particular weight in determining the outcome was the first red card handed out by referee Nathan Wall just before half-time and, indeed, the only dismissal you could argue against.
Clare goalkeeper Jason Loughnane, upon gathering a long delivery, attempted to side-step the close attention of Nolan, but was caught on the neck by the butt of the corner-forward’s hurley. Granted, it was a lazy effort on the part of Nolan to halt Loughnane’s progress, but certainly not demanding of a straight dismissal. It capped a contentious half-hour in which Wall had already dished out three yellow cards, drawing the ire of both sets of fans in the 1,218 crowd.
Tipperary appeared to brush off Nolan’s dismissal when pointing in the opening seconds of the second half, stretching their lead to 0-11 to 0-9. It followed a first-half display where half-forwards Stephen Quirke and Alan Tynan caused real problems, scoring all but one of their 0-10 total. Andrew Coffey’s early second-half minor, however, would prove their last score for 28 minutes, in which time they were hit for 1-14 and incurred a further two red cards.
Clare manager Eamon Fennessy accepted the red card shown to Nolan was a turning point given the visitors had shaded the opening exchanges. “The first sending-off seemed to unsettle them,” he said. “We got the lads in at half-time, regrouped and told them they weren’t hurling to their potential. We struck a few early scores and took momentum from there.
“All our preparation centred on taking the game to Tipperary, we did that and thankfully we came out on the right end. They are the ones that set the standard in the first-half, we had to come to their level, we did but we did it the hard way. “This is a new group with very few survivors from last year and so every game is bringing them on.”
Aaron Shanagher led the Clare onslaught, his converted penalty on 50 minutes ending the game as a contest. Connors conceded the penalty for a wild pull on Ian Galvin. The corner-back received a straight red and was soon joined in the stand by substitute McCullagh after his needless challenge on Shanagher.

Electric Ireland Munster Minor Hurling Championship Play-off 2: Clare 1-23 Tipperary 0-12
Round-up from GAA.ie
Clare advanced to the semi-final of the Munster Minor Hurling Championship following a 14-point defeat of Tipperary in Cusack Park, Ennis on Wednesday night. The Banner County have earned a rematch against Waterford in the semi-final in late June, having lost to the All-Ireland champions by 1-13 to 0-11 in the quarter-final three weeks ago.
Eamonn Fennessy’s side negotiated their way through the ‘back door’ after that defeat to the Déise, first beating Kerry and then by securing an impressive win over Tipperary tonight. Clare were 0-10 to 0-9 down at half-time, but Tipperary had Tommy Nolan sent off just before the break and really struggled in the second half.
Aaron Shanagher, who hit a hat-trick of goals against Kerry last week, hit the back of the net from a 20-yard free to put the Banner men 1-18 to 0-11 ahead in the final quarter. Clare had hit nine points without reply before that. Tipperary finished with 12 men, losing Willie Connors and Chris McCullagh to further red cards in the closing stages. Shanagher finished the game with an impressive tally of 1-13 for the winners.

Munster Minor Hurling Championship – Odds and Ends
Waterford have won at least 1 match in the Munster Minor Hurling Championship over the last 7 years. Cork and Limerick have the next best consecutive streak with at least 1 victory in each of the last 5 years. Tipperary have won a game in each of the last 3 years but need to win this game v Clare to maintain that record. While Clare did not secure a victory last year, they won a game in each of the previous 7 years. Tipperary have the best consecutive streak since 2000 winning a game in each of the ten years from 2000 to 2009 inclusive.
Limerick are the defending Munster Minor Hurling Champions following a 1-20 to 4-8 victory over Waterford at Semple Stadium in the 2013 final replay. `
Waterford secured their first All Ireland minor hurling title since 1948 when they defeated Galway in the final on September 8th 2013 by 1-21 to 0-16.
Kerry made a welcome return to the Munster championship this year. In 2012, when they last competed, they lost both their games – the first against Tipperary and the second against Cork. 2013 was a good year for them as they won the All Ireland Minor Hurling B championship defeating Meath by 1-19 to 3-9 in the final.
Cork Coach Mark Landers captained Cork to win the All-Ireland senior hurling title in 1999. Manager Denis Ring guided St. Colman’s College Fermoy to a number of Harty Cup titles. This is a first season in charge for Denis and his team, who were appointed at the end of last season.
Tipperary captain, Brian Hogan, is the son of former TIpperary Senior Hurling goalkeeper and manager Ken. Brian lined out in goal for the Tipperary Minor Hurlers in their two matches last year emulating his father Ken who was the Tipperary Minor Hurling goalkeeper in 1980 and 1981, winning Munster and All-Ireland Minor Hurling medals in 1980.
Clare appeared in 3 Munster minor hurling finals in a row from 2010 to 2012, winning in 2010 and 2011 against Waterford and losing to Tipperary in 2012. Several of their All Ireland senior winning squad of 2013 featured on those minor teams.

Waterford 6-9 Clare 4-12
A last-minute Joe Allen strike settled an outrageously open and enjoyable 10-goal treat at Fraher Field last night. Playing a fast moving, direct brand of football in the Dungarvan sun, Oran Curran’s strikeforce outgunned the Banner as two attack-minded outfits traded blows before 277 fans.
Joe Allen (2-4), Conor Gleeson (five points and three assists) and Conor Prunty (two goals) thrived in the free-scoring environment. On the opposite side, Keelan Sexton (2-5) drove a Clare comeback from nine points back with the full-forward line posting 1-7 between them.
Waterford coasted three goals clear (4-4 to 1-4) amid a flurry of first-half activity. Joe Allen produced an unstoppable drive just 12 seconds in, after being played in by Conor Gleeson. Allen added a point seconds later. The Banner were always dangerous and a swift turn by Evan Courtney after 14 minutes set up an opening for Darren Nagle to goal.
The Déise supplied Gleeson with regularity and The Nire frontman hit two points and played the final pass in three first-half majors. He transferred to Dylan Guiry who punched to the net after 16 minutes. Aaron Donnelly intercepted a Clare kickout six minutes later and, after an exchange with Gleeson, fired low and hard. Conor Prunty rounded off another move.
The visitors ate into that lead and brought it to within three. Keelan Sexton beat keeper Craig Brown and a pair of Aidan Davidson points left them only a goal behind (4-5 to 2-8). Waterford eased their anxiety when Conor Prunty slotted his second goal on 42 minutes after a pass from Allen. Two Allen points pushed them out to six with 10 minutes left (5-7 to 2-10). Two goals in 60 seconds from Keelan Sexton and Evan Courtney suddenly levelled a heart-thumping affair.
A brace of Conor Gleeson eased Déise nerves but Liam Madigan then made it a one-point contest. With a minute left Allen’s second goal settled it. Cork await in the final four.

Waterford advanced to the semi-finals of the Munster Minor Football Championship with a three-point win over Clare in a thrilling game which produced 10 goals at Fraher Field, Dungarvan on Tuesday night. The Déise are now back in the main draw and will play Cork in the Munster semi-final, with the game scheduled to take place on May 7 or 14 in Dungarvan.
In a crazy game, Waterford led by 4-4 to 1-4 at the break, but Clare drew level by the 51st minute at 4-10 to 5-7 before the hosts hit back with a late goal from Joe Allen to seal the win. Allen, Dylan Guiry, Aaron Donnelly and Conor Prunty got the Waterford goals in the first half, while Prunty and Allen both raised green flags again in the second half.

Useful Information
Clare have won at least one game in each of the last five seasons in the Munster Minor Football Championship and need a victory against Limerick to stretch that record to 6 seasons.
Since 1956, Cork and Kerry have won every Munster Minor Football title with the exception of 1984, 1995, 2011 and 2012 when Tipperary were successful.
Kerry have played 56 games in the Munster Minor Football Championship since 2000, leading Tipperary who played 54 games in the same period.
Cork, Kerry and Tipperary won at least 1 match in the Munster Minor Football Championship every year since 2001 and their first round victories ensured that record stretches for another year.
Waterford have won 2 of their last 21 matches in the Munster Minor Football Championship.
Limerick have won one of their last 13 matches in the Munster Minor Football Championship.
All 6 counties have been involved in draws since 2000. Remarkably Kerry, Cork, Tipperary and Clare have all had 4 draws in that period while Waterford have had 5 and Limerick 3.

Peter Creedon’s side just had too much for Clare, and they finished strongly in the final 20 minutes, outscoring their opponents by 0-8 to 0-4 in the decisive final period. A tally of 1-8 from Conor Sweeney proved crucial for Tipperary, and it was his two late points, one from play and one from a free, which sealed Tipperary’s win and sent them away from Croke Park with a rare trophy. Regardless of the result of this game, both these sides are promoted and will play in Division IV next season.
Tipperary led 1-7 to 0-9 at the end of a competitive first half, with Sweeney’s 19th minute goal the decisive score in the opening 35 minutes. Sweeney pounced after Peter Acheson’s shot had been saved by Pierce De Loughrey, with the Ballyporeen man firing home sharply when the ball broke to him. That goal put Tipperary one point ahead, with Clare having been 0-6 to 0-4 ahead before that. Three fine scores from wing forward Shane McGrath had helped them into the lead, while Sweeney (2) and Barry Grogan registered early on for Tipperary. McGrath, who had started superbly for Clare, was also guilty of some poor decision making, spurning three good chances for Clare in the second quarter.
Nonetheless, points from the excellent David Tubridy (free), Cathal O’Connor and Ciarán Russell kept Clare in touch after Tipperary had a dominant spell close to the end of the first half, creating lots of chances and registering points from Robbie Kiely and George Hannigan.
Clare were level shortly after the restart, points from David Keenan and Jamie Malone coming either side of a Grogan score to leave it 0-11 to 1-8 after 42 minutes.
However, Clare broke through for a superb goal seconds later when Martin O’Leary found some space and burned past Tipperary corner back Andrew Morrissey before planting the ball into the roof of the net past Paul Fitzgerald. That put Clare three ahead, but Tipp hit four without reply in the next 10 minutes through the impressive Sweeney (3) and Grogan, to lead by one heading into the final 15 minutes. A magnificent score from Tubridy on 60 minutes levelled the sides up, and they remained level with five to go after Sweeney (free) and McGrath traded scores.
However, two late scores from Sweeney put Tipperary two ahead with time almost up, and although Tubridy gave Clare hope with an excellent free under pressure, Tipperary held strong in the last few minutes to take the win.

Tipperary and Clare will contest the Allianz Football League Division 4 Final on Saturday next April 26th at 5:00pm in Croke Park. The game will serve as a curtain-raiser to the Division 3 Final between Cavan and Roscommon. Tipperary have been very impressive in the League to date, securing promotion with 1 round to spare after 5 wins and a draw in their first 6 games, including a 3-9 to 0-14 victory over Saturday’s opponents Clare in a game played at Semple Stadium Thurles on March 9th.
Tipperary’s last promotion from Division 4 and appearance in a Division 4 Final was in 2008 when Tipperary lost to Offaly by 2-13 to 0-12. Brian Coen scored 10 of Tipperary’s 12 points on that occasion. The Tipperary team which lost to Offaly in the 2008 Division 4 Final lined out as follows – Paul Fitzgerald (Fethard); Aidan Foley (Moyle Rovers), Mark Peters (Galtee Rovers), Ciaran McDonald (Aherlow); Paddy Codd (Killenaule), Robbie Costigan (Cahir), Cian Maher (Fethard); Kevin Mulryan (JK Brackens), George Hannigan (Shannon Rovers); Philip Austin (Borrisokane), Eoin Kearney (Ballyporeen), Laurence Coskeran (Aherlow); Damien O’Brien (Eire Og Annacarty), Seamus Grogan (Aherlow), Brian Coen (Fethard). ALLIANZ LEAGUE TOP SCORERS
In Gaelic Football, Ballyporeen’s Conor Sweeney currently sits on top of the highest scorer list across all the divisions having accounted for 5 goals and 41 points, an aggregate total of 56 points which will certainly be good enough for the honour of being the top scorer in Division 4. With the four Division Finals down for decision this weekend, Conor is 8 points clear of his nearest rival across all the divisions (Derry’s Mark Lynch who has scored 2-42 – 48 points). In addition to Conor’s achievements, Aherlow forward Barry Grogan’s tally of 5-22 (37 points) is good enough to be in the top 3 of Division 4 scorers and in the top 10 across all divisions.

Free-scoring Clare cruise past Limerick
By John Redington for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Clare 2-17 Limerick 3-07
Both Clare and Limerick minor footballers faced into last night’s Munster championship qualifier in Newcastlewest hoping to put heavy opening defeats behind them. It proved to be redemption for the Banner who now face into next week’s clash with Waterford after their sharper forwards and stronger midfield had them out of sight long before half-time.
Limerick managed a second-half fightback but not before Clare had added another 1-2 after the break. Despite facing the wind, Mikey Morrissey’s equalising reply to Keelan Sexton held Limerick level for 10 minutes. But after Gary McCarthy’s fisted effort was saved by Killian Normoyle, Aiden Davidson’s point on the break opened the floodgates and another eight unanswered scores had already decided the outcome before Morrissey broke the sequence with a free.
But within seconds as Clare won the kickout, Evan Courtney broke down the right and Liam Madigan finished his cross to the net. Strikes by Sexton, Niall McCarthy and Davidson left the score at 1-13 to 0-2 at the break.
Any lingering Limerick hopes disappeared when Davidson goaled seconds after the restart. But after Madigan and Sexton’s free widened the gap to 19 points, Clare sat back and three points followed by Tommy Childs’ long-range goal raised Treaty spirits. However, despite Richard Hayes and corner-back Seán Murphy scoring two more goals before the finish, the chasm was always too wide to bridge.
Scorers for Clare: Keelan Sexton 0-5 (3 frees), Liam Madigan 1-3, Aiden Davidson 1-2, Evan Courtney 0-3, Conal O’Hanafin, Maccen Byrne, Cian O’Dea, Niall McCarthy 0-1 each.

Limerick have won one of their last 12 matches in the Munster Minor Football Championship.
All 6 counties have been involved in draws since 2000. Remarkably Kerry, Cork, Tipperary and Clare have all had 4 draws in that period while Waterford have had 5 and Limerick 3.

Shanagher does the trick for Clare
Report from the Irish Independent newspaper
Clare made light work of defeating Kerry at Cusack Park in Ennis, handing out a 6-25 to 0-11 drubbing in a play-off game in the Munster minor hurling championship.
Having lost to Waterford in the opening round, the Banner were determined to get back to winning ways and, unfortunately for Kerry, they felt the backlash. Though Clare grabbed the opening score, a goal by full-forward Aaron Shanagher within 75 seconds, the opening half was not completely one-way traffic.
Credit to Kerry, by the 25th minute they found themselves only two points adrift (1-6 to 0-7). Clare boss Eamon Fennessy labelled his side’s first-half display as “diabolical”. Nevertheless Clare’s return of 1-4 to no score in the final five minutes of the opening half helped to steady a few nerves. In-form corner-forward Colin Corbett recorded Clare’s second goal on the stroke of half-time.
It proved to be the score that opened the floodgates in the second period. Clare outscored the Kingdom by 4-15 to 0-3 after half-time. Goals by Shanagher in the 39th and 50th minute plus two others from centre-forward Michael O’Shea and substitute Shane Conroy mortally wounded Kerry.
Scorers – Clare: A Shanagher 3-6 (4fs), C Corbett 1-5, I Galvin 0-6, M O’Shea 1-2, S Conway 1-0, M O’Malley, P McNamara 0-2 each, L O’Donovan, B Guilfoyle 0-1 each. Kerry: B Barrett 0-9 (8fs, 1 ’65’), F Mackessy, J Brick 0-1 each.

Munster Minor Hurling Championship – Odds and Ends
Waterford have won at least 1 match in the Munster Minor Hurling Championship over the last 7 years. Cork and Limerick have the next best consecutive streak with at least 1 victory in each of the last 5 years. Tipperary have won a game in each of the last 3 years but need to win their play-off game v Clare or Kerry to maintain that record.
Kerry make a welcome return to the Munster championship this year.

Tipp beat Clare to set up league final with Cats
ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL: TIPPERARY 2-24 CLARE 2-17
Report from the GAA.ie web site
Two goals from Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher and a haul of 0-12 from Seamus Callanan saw Tipperary beat Clare at the Gaelic Grounds and set up an Allianz Hurling League final against Kilkenny for the second year in a row. Although Clare kept battling throughout, and got within three points of Tipperary twice in the second half, the Premier County were the better side throughout and were fully deserving of their seven-point win.
Patrick Maher’s two goals proved extremely decisive. Both came in response to Clare goals, in the first and second halves. Patrick Donnellan’s goal for Clare in the 40th minute left Davy Fitzgerald’s side just three behind, but Maher’s goal four minutes later revived a flagging Tipp, and they kicked on from there.
Clare stayed in the game in the final quarter, and the game was in the balance until the closing 10 minutes. However, Tipperary finished strongly, and points from Woodlock, Shane Bourke (2) and the highly impressive Callanan completed a fine win for a side that had seemingly been on the brink of relegation from Division IA just a few weeks ago.
Tipperary were in firm control at half-time, with Callanan’s haul of 0-8 in the opening 35 helping them into a seven-point interval lead.
He hit two early points to make it 0-3 to 0-1 but Clare found the net after just four minutes, with Cathal McInerney managing to bundle the sliotar over the line after a scramble with the Tipperary goalkeeper Darren Gleeson and a couple of Premier County defenders.
Tipperary weren’t too rattled by the goal though, and after the sides traded a couple of points, they found the net themselves on the 20 minute mark. Maher took his goal well, finishing sweetly after emerging from a ruck of players with the ball under firm control on his hurl. That made it 1-7 to 1-3, and five more points from Callanan, three of them from placed balls, had Tipperary 1-13 to 1-5 ahead as the first half drew to a close.
A Noel McGrath point then put Tipperary into a nine-point lead, but Clare finished the half with scores from Tony Kelly and McInerney to give themselves hope for the second period.
Those hopes became more concrete after the restart when Donnellan found the net, smashing the ball home after a scramble close to the Tipperary goal. That strike left just a goal between the sides, and with Tipperary looking decidedly less vigorous than they had in the first half, Clare looked confident. However, just like he did in the first half, Patrick Maher raced in on goal and found the net at a crucial stage of the game. His superbly struck goal, which came about after a clever Conor O’Mahony free, restored Tipperary’s six-point lead and left Clare with a serious challenge on their hands.
The All-Ireland champions tried gallantly to meet it, with brilliant scores from Tony Kelly and David McInerney leaving just four between the sides again, and although Tipperary responded with scores from James Woodlock and Callanan, Clare points from Colm Galvin, Colin Ryan and Podge Collins left them three behind, at 2-16 to 2-13, as the game entered the final quarter.
Fortunately for Tipperary, they saved some of their best wine until last and they outscored their opponents by 0-8 to 0-4 in a high-quality final 15 minutes. Callanan tapped a penalty over the bar in that period, while Niall O’Meara (2) and Shane Bourke (2) both found their range to complete what was in the end, a comfortable victory for Tipperary, who take on Kilkenny in the decider on Sunday, May 4.

Murtagh wins it at the death for Roscommon
Report: Arthur Sullivan from GAA.ie
CADBURY GAA FOOTBALL ALL-IRELAND U21 CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL: CORK 3-12 ROSCOMMON 1-19
A brilliant free from Diarmuid Murtagh with the last kick of the game gave Roscommon victory in an extraordinary All-Ireland U21 semi-final against Cork in Portlaoise on Saturday.
It was a fitting seal to a wonderful individual display from Murtagh, who finished with 0-10, and a reprieve for Roscommon, who looked like they had dramatically thrown the game away, coughing up a six-point lead to Cork in the final minutes before Murtagh rescued them. Ultan Harney’s brilliant 52nd minute goal looked like it had given Roscommon the win, but a brilliant Dan Mac Eoin goal, directly from a free in the last minute, brought Cork dramatically level with time almost up. However, Murtagh completed a glorious individual day by nailing the pressure kick, and the huge Roscommon crowd rejoiced with rapture as they celebrated reaching a second U21 All-Ireland football final in the space of two years.
Roscommon led 0-11 to 0-5 at the end of a first half in which they ended up completely dominating their opponents. The first 12 minutes were even enough, with the sides level on 0-4 apiece at the end of them. Mac Eoin kicked a couple in that early period for Cork, while Murtagh and Donie Smith were on target for Roscommon.
It was in the second quarter that Roscommon really took control of the game though as unanswered points from Murtagh (2), Ciarán Kilcline, Smith, Ronan Daly and Harney left the Connacht champions six clear with half-time looming. Cork ended a 20 minute scoreless with a MacEoin free before the break but another gem from Murtagh, his fourth of the half, kept Roscommon’s six point lead for the second half.
Cork were much improved after the restart, and a well taken goal from the impressive Mark Sugrue on 33 minutes gave them hope. An Alan Cadogan point cut Roscommon’s lead further, but then Murtagh went on a free-scoring burst, kicking four frees without reply to re-establish a six-point lead on 40 minutes. Cork edged back into the game again though, and a well-taken Cadogan strike on 49 minutes left them just two behind at 0-17 to 2-9. However, Roscommon replied brilliantly.
They worked a superb point, with Mark Healy finishing a great team move, and then a similar move moments later ended with midfielder Harney smashing the ball to the top left corner to put Roscommon six ahead again with seven minutes to go. Cork clawed their way back into it ominously, with Sugrue knocking over a couple of points, but Roscommon still looked to be heading for the victory.
That changed when Mac Eoin somehow cracked a 20 metre free into the roof of the net to level the sides up in injury-time, but Roscommon got the finish their fans craved when they won the resultant kick-out and ended up with a free on the right wing. Murtagh had delivered an attacking masterclass to that point and he finished the game in fitting style, sailing the kick straight over the bar to give his side a memorable win.

Waterford’s Tony Browne retires from inter-county hurling
Statement issued by the GPA on behalf of Tony Browne
April 17, 2014
“I would like to take this opportunity to officially announce my retirement from inter-county hurling.
“To do so is always a tough decision for any athlete but I know I have been blessed in so many ways to have experienced what I have with the Waterford hurling teams over the past three decades.
“I have loved and embraced every moment wearing the Waterford jersey from my earliest days. However, I know the time is now right for me to bring the curtain down on my county career.
“I am so proud in knowing I have given my all to Waterford hurling. It is now time for others to enjoy and cherish the same honour and pride that I felt over the past 23 years representing Waterford.
“Throughout those years I had the honour of playing with and against some of the greatest players ever seen in the game. I would like to thank all of the past and present players for their wonderful support and friendship throughout my career.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaches the back-room teams over the years and indeed the medical staff who helped me to prolong my career way beyond expectation.
“I was very fortunate to have played under so many fantastic managers, all of whom contributed greatly to my career.
“I would like to pay a special tribute to my club Mount Sion and my club colleagues for their support and guidance in helping me fulfil my potential as a hurler and as a person. The backing of my club enabled me to compete at the very highest level and follow my dreams.
“It goes without saying the Waterford supporters are amongst the greatest in the GAA. I personally want to thank you for everything all through the years. I will cherish those cheers and your support for all time.
“I so look forward to supporting Waterford GAA for many years ahead and wish the current players and management the very best for the future.
“Finally to my family I sincerely thank you for your understanding, loyalty and support I will be forever grateful for all you have done.”

Hurley sets Cork on road to victory
Cork 6-15 Limerick 1-7
Report from the Irish Independent newspaper
Cork were far too strong for Limerick at Pairc Ui Rinn last night as they cruised to a 23-point victory. This was a non-event from the very start, with a goal and a point from Michael Hurley putting Cork into a commanding position inside two minutes and from there they set about ensuring that Limerick had no way into the game. Limerick did not open their account until the 22nd minute through Mikey Morrissey by which stage they had conceded 3-10.
Shane Kingston was the source of five of those points and two goals in quick succession, from Damien Buckley and Hurley, had put the outcome beyond doubt even at such an early stage. Sean O’Donoghue added a fourth goal shortly before half-time and Cork led 4-11 to 0-2 at the break. Limerick deserve credit for not giving up and late on their brightest star, Morrissey, scored a consolation goal.
