Limerick beat Cork to claim Waterford Crystal Cup
Cork 1-16 Limerick 3-20
Report from RTE.ie
Limerick secured the first silverware of the year in Mallow when claiming their first Waterford Crystal Cup since 2006 in a commanding display that saw them defeat Cork by ten points.
Despite meeting in the last two Munster finals and also going toe- to-toe in Division 1B of the Allianz League last year, this was the first ever decider between the neighbouring counties in this provincial competition, a prospect that attracted 2,145 hardy souls to Mallow.
It was a very open and entertaining contest typifying a pre-season competition as all but three points of the 40 scores came from play, a statistic that impressively including all of Limerick’s tally. Limerick held the upper hand in the opening half after been rocked into life by Stephen Moylan’s eighth minute goal for the hosts which eased Cork 1-2 to 0-2 clear.
It appeared to be the jolt that Limerick required as within four minutes, they had cancelled out the Rebel’s advantage before hitting the front with an opportunistic 14th minute goal from Gavin O’Mahony. The Kilmallock player, who was allowed to play due to a suspension for his club’s All-Ireland Semi-Final next weekend, intercepted on the 45 metre line and burst through unchallenged to billow the net at 1-06 to 1-02.
The visitors would maintain that healthy cushion, thanks in the main to inspirational scoring contributions from wing-back Tom Condon and teenage sensation Cian Lynch who would both finish the half with three points apiece. Damien Cahalane and Cian McCarthy performed best for Cork at either end of the pitch in that period to keep their side in touch, however that good work would be outdone just before the break when goalkeeper Patrick Collins spilled a routine catch and Adrian Breen was on hand to give Limerick a 2-11 to 1-09 advantage.
In an effort to get back on track, Cork emptied their experienced bench in the third quarter, with Seamus Harnedy, Marc Ellis, Christopher Joyce, Patrick Horgan and Conor O’Sullivan all being introduced to good effect. The home side would reduce the arrears to three by the 50th minute while Horgan also fired a bullet off the crossbar that somehow ricocheted wide.
Limerick’s response epitomised the character of the current side however as they outscored their frustrated opponents by 1-6 to 0-2 in a strong finish that included a second goal for Breen in the 57th minute. Cork’s attempts on goal proved in vein as Limerick exacted revenge for last year’s double defeat in league and championship deciders and also got a much needed boost ahead of their latest league promotion charge.

Rochestown stay on track for quadruple after beating Ard Scoil Rís
By Denis Hurley for the Irish Examiner newspaper
St Francis College, Rochestown 4-11 Ard Scoil Rís 1-17: Dr Harty Cup semi-final: Not since Midleton CBS’s win of 2006 has a Cork school inscribed its name on the Dr Harty Cup, but the possibility of that run ending remains a live possibility after this Charleville cracker.
On Saturday, Rochestown’s St Francis College continued their pitch for the perfect season and maintained hopes of an incredible quadruple with a fine all-round performance against holders Ardscoil Rís. The O’Callaghan Cup (Cork SAHC) is already in the cabinet, the final of its football equivalent (Simcox Cup) is approaching and next Saturday they face St Brendan’s of Killarney in the Corn Uí Mhuirí semi-final.
A first-ever Harty would cap it all and selector Diarmuid Fahy expressed his delight after an impressive win. “It’s a massive achievement for the school,” he said. “They kept their heads all through, they were fantastic.
Though the point-scoring sights will have to be calibrated before the final against Thurles, it was otherwise hard to fault Rochestown. Seán Powter’s two goals were a great reward for his industry while 1-3 and 1-2 respectively from Ciarán Cormack and Shane Kingston won’t surprise any observers of underage hurling in Cork.
John Cashman and David Griffin at full- and centre-back, switched from their usual posts, helped to lead a good defensive effort and at midfield John O’Sullivan ran himself to a standstill, scoring one point but involved at the coalface for countless others.
Rochestown enjoyed a dream start, up 0-6 to 0-2 and 0-7 to 0-3 inside 20 minutes despite playing against the wind. Kingston went close to an early goal too, but there appeared to be an inevitability about how Ardscoil began to claw their way back into the game.
Ronan Lynch led the charge as they drew level only for Powter to fire to the net for ‘Roco’ on 28 minutes after he had extracted the ball from a scrum of players. Even still, though, Ardscoil managed to tie matters by half-time, Peter Casey with two fine points and then Nathan Fox with a long-range effort.
Casey and Lynch then put the Limerick school ahead for the first time early in the second half, but when the difficult questions were asked, Rochestown had the answers. Diarmaid O’Mahony levelled from halfway after Griffin had batted down a ball he shouldn’t have got to, and then Kingston struck for a goal, cracking a powerful shot from the right after he had created the chance himself.
Casey’s fifth point left just two in it, but then Rochestown bagged a third goal. Kingston’s long-range goal attempt looked speculative but it required goalkeeper Seán Mullane to parry the ball and Powter slid in to force the ball over the line. Points from Lynch kept Ardscoil within touching distance but once more Rochestown came up with a goal when required and the best was saved until last. O’Sullivan played a nice ball to Powter and his pass was beautifully controlled by Cormack, who applied a lovely finish.
That made it 4-10 to 0-15, but even then Ardscoil weren’t lying down. Lynch added two more frees to bring his tally to nine points, though when Daniel Meaney pointed in injury time it looked to have decided the outcome. There was time for Ardscoil to win a late penalty but though Lynch drilled that home, it was the last action. The final awaits for Rochestown.
“A lot of the lads will be playing next Saturday again against Brendan’s but they’re managing well,” Fahy said. They’re well looked after in their clubs, which is very important too. The support from them and the school community is fantastic. There are a lot of wise heads on young shoulders.”

Rochestown College overcome the champions to reach their first ever Harty Cup decider
Rochestown College (Cork) 4-11 Ardscoil Rís (Limerick) 1-17
Report from the42.ie
GOALS WERE CRUCIAL for St Francis College, Rochestown, whose dream season continued as they dethroned Dr Harty Cup holders Ardscoil Rís in their semi-final at Charleville today. Rochestown only trailed once in the whole game, after points from Aaron Gillane and Ronan Lynch had put Ardscoil 0-12 to 1-8 clear early in the second half, but the response was emphatic.
Diarmaid O’Mahony’s point levelled matters before Shane Kingston netted in the 41st minute. Though the impressive Peter Casey responded for Ardscoil, Rochestown’s third goal arrived soon after as Seán Powter slid in for his second green flag after Seán Mullane had saved from Kingston.
That opened up a four-point advantage, 3-9 to 0-14, and when Ciarán Cormack rounded off a beautiful move with skilful control and a perfect finish on 55, it was 4-10 to 0-15.
Like any good champions, Ardscoil died hard as Lynch pointed twice and then, after a point from Rochestown midfielder John O’Sullivan – who was excellent throughout – the Limerick side were awarded a penalty. Lynch drilled his shot past the three men on the line to give himself a personal tally of 1-9 and leave just three points in it, but it proved to be the last action.
In the first half, Rochestown had led by four points on two separate occasions but poor shooting was costly and Lynch had helped Ardscoil to level by the 26th minute. While Powter’s first goal gave Rochestown breathing space again, points from Casey (two) and Nathan Fox left it level at the break. In their first ever Dr Harty Cup final, Rochestown will play Thurles CBS on Saturday, 21 February.
Scorers for Rochestown: Seán Powter 2-0, Ciarán Cormack 1-3 (0-3 frees), Shane Kingston 1-2, John O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Mahony 0-2 each, Liam O’Sullivan, Daniel Meaney 0-1 each.
Scorers for Ardscoil Rís: Ronan Lynch 1-9 (1-0 penalty, 0-7 frees), Peter Casey 0-5 (0-2 frees), Nathan Fox, Michael Mackey, Páraic O’Loughlin 0-1 each.

Waterford beat Wicklow – building a head of steam
By Tomás McCarthy for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Waterford 0-14 Wicklow 0-10: Allianz Football League Division 4: Waterford reinvested their new found wealth in another adventurous attacking display on Saturday night at Fraher Field. “There was a bit of expectation after winning the McGrath Cup but I think the boys coped with it admirably,” observed manager Tom McGlinchey after his side took care of Wicklow with a confident second-half showing. “We scored 14 points and we had seven different scorers so it was a nice way to start the league.”
McGlinchey hit the reset button beforehand to concentrate minds on promotion. “We took the McGrath Cup as a standalone competition. To get the four competitive games and to win it was absolutely fantastic. We parked it and looked at the league as a new challenge totally. At times tonight, we played good football. I think the crowd here really got behind them and they got some good scores.”
The spread of scorers reflects positively on Waterford’s expressive brand of play. League debutant Michael O’Halloran beamed brightest with four points from play, including a couple of booming second-half efforts.
The sides were tied five times during an entertaining first half, with Conor McGraynor, Dean Odlum and John McGrath all threatening for Wicklow. But as the visitors’ challenge fizzled out, Waterford broke loose towards the tail-end. Even when Liam Lawlor limped out of the fray with a dead leg on 27 minutes, the Déise never blinked.
The Ballinacourty pair of Michael O’Halloran and Patrick Hurney sent over two each and Shane Ahearne claimed three frees as they squeezed 0-9 to 0-7 ahead. With the breeze behind them, Waterford asserted their authority with five uninterrupted points. Tadhg Ó hUallacháin punched over and then created a goal chance for Michael Curry but the Rathgormack man struck the woodwork.
O’Halloran’s third from 40 metres out started to turn the screw. It was one-way traffic and further points from Mark Ferncombe, Ahearne and O’Halloran opened up an unassailable seven-point lead. Wicklow substitute Seanie Furlong had a penalty claim turned down and their woes were compounded by a black card for Ross O’Brien. They didn’t land a blow for 31 minutes before a late flood of consolation points. After five home wins on the spin, a trip to Tullamore poses the next test for McGlinchey’s side.
Scorers for Waterford: M O’Halloran, S Ahearne (4fs) 0-4 each; P Hurney 0-2; T Ó hUallacháin, M Ferncombe, L Lawlor, G Nugent 0-1 each.

Allianz Football League Division IV: Waterford 0-14 Wicklow 0-10
Waterford continued their impressive early season form with a four-point defeat of Wicklow at Fraher Field in Dungarvan on Saturday night, their fifth successive victory of 2015. Having won the McGrath Cup last week, Tom McGlinchey’s charges made the perfect start to their Allianz League campaign in front of 420 supporters at a frigid Dungarvan.
Michael O’Halloran was the man of the match, hitting two points from play in each half. Waterford led by 0-9 to 0-7 at the break, having lost Liam Lawlor to injury in the second quarter, but an impressive second half showing from the home side saw them post a notable opening day win.

Thurles CBS into first Harty Cup final since 2011 at Castletroy’s expense
By Shane Brophy for the Irish Times newspaper
Thurles CBS (Tipperary) 1-9 Castletroy CC (Limerick) 0-11
Thurles CBS withstood a ferocious second half fightback from 14-man Castletroy Community College to progress to their first Harty Cup final since 2011 following a tight semi-final in Toomevara on Saturday afternoon.
Castletroy did superbly well to be in with a chance at the end having played almost 50 minutes with 14 men after full forward Ian Coates was issued with a straight red card for an off the ball strike on Thurles’ Jack Derby.
However, Thurles struggled to make their numerical advantage count in the bitterly cold conditions, that was until the final five minutes of the first half when they scored three unanswered points from Niall Heffernan (2 frees) and Michael Connors before Robbie Long struck for the goal in added time, deflecting Heffernan’s free to the net.
Castletroy had the breeze with them after the break and they made it count with Nash’s free-taking to a high standard while half back Andrew La Touche Cosgrave burst forward for two inspirational scores.
However the Limerick side were unable to level as Thurles kept their noses in front with Niall Heffernan continuing to be the teams chief threat in attack. A total of 13 wides from Thurles ensured Castletroy remained in the hunt in the closing stages with Barry Nash having his sides best opportunity to force a replay but he miss-hit his scoreable effort in the final minute as Thurles hung on.
Thurles CBS: W Tierney; C McCullagh, E Heffernan, J Derby; T Hayes, J Skehan, D Quirke; B McCarthy, C Moloney; M Connors (0-1), K Duggan (0-1), N Heffernan (0-7, 6f); J Butler, R Teehan, R Long (1-0)
Replacements: R Purcell for Butler (46); P Kennedy for Moloney (48); B Kelly for Connors (55).

Report from the42.ie
THURLES CBS WITHSTOOD a ferocious second-half revival from Castletroy Community College to progress to their first Dr Harty Cup final since 2010, in a well-contested semi-final in Toomevara this afternoon. Barry Nash, a Limerick minor star for the past two years, had the chance in the final minute to send the game to a replay, but he mis-hit a scorable free and Castletroy’s chance at a first Harty Cup final appearance disappeared.
Castletroy did superbly well to be in with a chance at the end, having played almost 50 minutes with fourteen men after full-forward Ian Coates was shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball strike on Thurles’ Jack Derby. However, Thurles struggled to make their numerical advantage count in the bitterly cold conditions — until the final five minutes of the first half when they scored three unanswered points from Niall Heffernan (two frees) and Michael Connors, before Robbie Long struck for the goal in added time, deflecting Heffernan’s free to the net.
Castletroy had the breeze with them after the break and they made it count, with Nash’s free-taking to a high standard, while half-back Andrew La Touche Cosgrave burst forward for two inspirational scores. However, the Limerick side were unable to level as Thurles kept their noses in front, with Niall Heffernan continuing to be the team’s chief threat in attack.
Thirteen wides from Thurles ensured Castletroy remained in the hunt in the closing stages, with Nash having his side’s best opportunity to force a replay, but it wasn’t to be. Thurles CBS will play Rochestown College in the final on Saturday, 21 February.
Scorers for Thurles CBS: Niall Heffernan 0-7 (6 frees); Robbie Long 1-0; Kevin Duggan, Michael Connors 0-1 each.
Scorers for Castletroy CC: Barry Nash 0-8 (7 frees); Andrew La Touche Cosgrave 0-3 (1 free)

AIB All-Ireland Club Junior Football Championship Semi-Final – Brosna (Kerry) 0-10 Rock (Tyrone) 1-7
Brosna (Kerry) drew with Rock (Tyrone) after extra time in the AIB All-Ireland Club Junior Football Championship Semi-Final on Sunday January 25th at Ballinasloe on a scoreline of Brosna (Kerry) 0-10 Rock (Tyrone) 1-7.
Brosna and Rock St Patrick’s must meet again
By Daragh Small for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Brosna (Kerry) 0-10 Rock St Patrick’s (Tyrone) 1-7 (AET): AIB All-Ireland Club JFC semi-final: Brosna and Rock St Patrick’s must meet again to see who enjoys a St Valentine’s date in Croke Park. Extra-time failed to separate the pair in a tense All-Ireland Club JFC semi-final at Duggan Park in Ballinasloe yesterday.
Rock, looking for their first All-Ireland JFC final appearance since they lost to Cork’s Canovee in 2008, played with the breeze in the first-half and led 1-4 to 0-3 at the interval. The game’s only goal came from Eamon Ward. That strike, added to an earlier score from Conor McCreesh, came before Tom McGoldrick got Brosna on the scoreboard after seven minutes.
Brothers James and Conor McCreesh had the final say of the first-half with points and the Tyrone men led by four. McGoldrick came to the Kerry side’s rescue in the second-half – he kicked Brosna’s first point and added two more before 60th minute.
Points from Ryan Crilly and Diarmuid Carroll looked to have it out of reach for the Kerrymen but Adam Brady got two points to tie it up. Extra-time was required but Rock’s Aidan McGarrity and McGoldrick of Brosna were the only ones to take their chances.

AIB All-Ireland Club Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi-Final – O’Donovan Rossa (Antrim) 2-12 Cappoquin (Waterford) 1-8
O’Donovan Rossa (Antrim) defeated Cappoquin (Waterford) by 2-12 to 1-8 in the AIB All-Ireland Club Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi-Final on January 25th at Cusack Park Mullingar.
Rossa steel too much for Cappoquin
By Tomás McCarthy for the Irish Examiner newspaper
O’Donovan Rossa (Antrim) 2-12Cappoquin (Waterford) 1-8: AIB All-Ireland Club IHC semi-final:
Antrim representatives O’Donovan Rossa sprung from the traps to defeat 14-man Cappoquin with a skilful and steely performance at a blustery Mullingar yesterday. Since an appearance in the All-Ireland senior final 26 years ago, the 15-times Antrim champions have rebuilt in the intermediate championship and they return to Croke Park on February 15 to face Kilburn Gaels.
“Our main objective was to install belief in the team and to try to get the younger players on board and believe in themselves,” explained manager Seamus Shannon. “It is a really young team and to get Rossa back up where it belongs, it takes those younger players to have the commitment and dedication the older generations had.”
Rossa dominated the skies from start to finish. “Anybody who wins the ball in the air generally wins the match,” Shannon observed. Conor McClelland ruled his patch at number six and wing-back Stephen Shannon scored four points, including two rousing efforts into the teeth of the breeze during the third quarter. In the absence of marquee forwards Stephen Beatty and Seaghan Shannon, Thomas Morgan stepped up with 2-3, including 2-1 from play.
Wind-assisted Rossa stunned the Munster champions after just 11 seconds when Thomas Morgan whipped first-time past Donal O’Rourke. The Antrim winners out-muscled their opponents throughout that opening period and displayed their aerial superiority. In the seventh minute, Deaglan Murphy supplied Morgan for his second as he sprinted past his marker and stung the far corner of the net (2-1 to 0-1). Rossa were totally on top against their shell-shocked opponents and were awarded a penalty on 15 minutes when Colm McVeigh was brought to ground. Faced by three defenders on the line, O’Rourke turned Gerard Walsh’s shot away for a ‘65’. The Ulster side also rued seven wides including five placed balls. Cappoquin’s task was made harder when county minor Andy Molumby was dismissed on a second yellow before the break. They reached the dressing room 2-5 to 0-2 in arrears.
Conditions worsened for the second-half as the rain swept in but the Waterford side upped their work-rate. Conor and Paul Murray led the recovery and they chipped away despite the numerical disadvantage. Aaron O’Sullivan batted the ball to the roof of the net on 45 minutes after a lengthy free from O’Rourke to leave five points between the teams (2-7 to 1-5). They didn’t move any nearer, however, as the talented Stephen Shannon replied with two superb strikes against the elements. Cappoquin selector Fintan O’Connor was tremendously proud of their fighting attitude. “They battled to the end and that’s all you can ask. There’s no shame in the way they bowed out.”
