Corn Ui Mhuiri final ends up in a stalemate

Though it ended in a welter of excitement, both football nurseries will be somewhat pleased to get another chance to put on their best bib and tucker and claim the Corn Ui Mhuiri (Munster PP SFC final). Neither PS Chorca Dhuibhne or Rochestown did enough to lift the blue riband of Munster colleges football in Killarney today, but it’s the Cork college that will have the greater regret ahead of the replay.
Having played into the elements in the first period, they only trailed 1-4 to 0-5 at the change of ends. But they suffered a battery malfunction in the third quarter, and trailed 1-7 to 0-5 after 37 minutes. One moment in the 48th minute, though, gave the Cork school the lifeline they required – a point attempt from Daniel Meaney dropped short for Ciaran Cormack to fist to the net, levelling the final at 1-7 apiece.
If it was fortunate in its making, it was no more so than the Chorca Dhuibhne goal in the 15th minute that put the reigning champions in charge – wing back Tom O’Sullivan profited from sloppy play by Roco but his shot took a deflection and looped over Paddy Lynch in the Roco goal.
Dingle enjoyed their best period after half time and Cormack’s goal was against the run of play. It shook Chorca Dhuibhne from their slumber and two quick points from Ger Brosnan and Conor Geaney put them in the box seat again with nine minutes left. Shane Kingston wided two frees, but converted two easier ones to level things before Sean Powter – quite the prospect – edged Roco into a winning position with time up.
Could they hang on and put the disappointment of last week’s Harty Cup loss behind them? Dingle had other ideas, though a silly late tackle from a Roco forward made their job easier – Seamus O Muirceartaigh holding his nerve from 40m to claim the draw. The replay, again likely to be at Dr Crokes pitch in Killarney, is slated for March 8th, though that’s also the day of the Cork-Kerry Allianz FL game in Pairc Ui Rinn. Talks may ensue.

Carlow claim dramatic win
By Tomás McCarthy for breakingnews.ie
Carlow 0-11 Waterford 0-9
Carlow maintained their unbeaten run in Division 4 with a dramatic away win over Waterford at Fraher Field. The away side hit six points in a row in the last ten minutes to claim the spoils and stun the hosts. Waterford played with wind assistance for the first half hour. Shane Ahearne started the scoring before Michael O’Halloran sent over a glorious 40 metre effort. Patrick Hurney finished off a three man move in the ninth minute. Carlow countered with the first point from Ciaran Moran on 15 minutes.
Waterford struggled with their shooting and ended the opening period with a tally of ten wides. Ahearne sent over three frees and Mark Ferncombe was on target from play as they stretched the lead to six. Darragh O’Brien had the final say for Carlow as he tidied up a patient build-up (0-7 to 0-2).
Turlough O’Brien’s visitors responded in the best possible manner on the resumption with early white flags from Sean Gannon and Daniel St Ledger. Brian Murphy’s free reduced the damage to two (0-7 to 0-5). Ahearne settled the Déise with two dead balls.
The play became frantic with both teams desperate for the spoils. Carlow put together six points in a row late on, three from Brian Murphy, two from midfielder Sean Gannon and one by substitute John Murphy to upset the hosts.

Late WIT point means Fitzgibbon Cup final goes to replay
By Eoghan Cormican for the Irish Examiner newspaper
UL 3-12 WIT 0-21
Corner-back Tom Fox’s point on 80 minutes ensured this dramatic Fitzgibbon Cup final would require a second day out. Stephen Bennett’s goal on 72 minutes for UL looked to be the defining score. No one told WIT, playing their third game in five days, as they rattled four on the trot to bring the sides level.
Points from Pauric Mahony and Jake Dillon moved WIT clear in the first period of extra-time, but they were reeled in by a Jason Forde goal. Tony Kelly had initially rescued UL, converting a difficult free two minutes into time added on to force extra-time. The game appeared to have slipped from their grasp when WIT substitute Johnny Hayes struck his third point on 60 minutes. It marked WIT’s fifth unanswered minor as they had assumed complete control.
Tommy Heffernan’s goal on 32 minutes had nudged UL 1-6 to 0-5 clear, but they failed to build on the green flag. The decision also to substitute John McGrath on 49 minutes robbed them of their leading forward. Following Pauric Mahony’s third free which reduced the gap to 1-7 to 0-9, Jake Dillon had an opportunity to level matters. He fluffed his chance, getting caught between two minds as a goal was a possibility. UL swept down the field and Cathal McInerney pointed to swing the pendulum back in their favour.
Tony Kelly and Jason Frode tacked on further minors in the subsequent action to stretch their lead back out to three, 1-10 to 0-10. From there WIT launched a remarkable comeback effort. All the more remarkable when you consider they returned to the dressing room at half-time trailing 0-6 to 0-4 despite having been supported by the elements in a lifeless opening 30 minutes.
UL’s Jason Forde was pulled from their half-forward line to act as a sweeper in front of full-back Brian Troy and Forde was most effective in cutting out the supply of ball feeding into WIT talisman Austin Gleeson. Indeed, such was Forde’s presence that Colm Bonnar was forced to move Gleeson out the field in a bid to revive their flailing effort.
John McGrath signalled UL’s early intent with three points on the hop and 10 minutes had elapsed before Harry Kehoe registered Waterford’s first. Kevin O’Brien and Tommy Heffernan kept WIT at arm’s length – Thomas Hamill, a Pauric Mahony free and an Austin Gleeson sideline cut bringing the WIT tally to a measly 0-4 by 8pm. It didn’t get much better thereafter.
Scorers for UL: J McGrath (0-5, 0-3 frees), T Heffernan (1-1); J Forde (1-1);S Bennett (1-0); T Kelly (0-2, 0-1 free); K O’Brien, C McInerney, PJ Scully (0-1 each).

Div IA: Tipp off the mark with win over Galway
ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION IA: TIPPERARY 2-18 GALWAY 0-20
Eamon O’Shea’s Tipperary held off a spirited fightback from Galway to collect their first Allianz League points of the season this afternoon. In front of 4,176 spectators, Tipp led by ten points in the second half before the visiting Tribesmen came roaring back into contention.
Galway were three points adrift and chasing an elusive goal before sub Conor Kenny made the game safe for Tipperary with an injury-time point. And Tipp, who lost heavily to Dublin in their opening Allianz League fixture, could finally breathe easily.
Tipp, beaten Allianz League finalists for the past two seasons, led by 0-14 to 0-11 at half-time and cracked on within 20 seconds of the restart. League debutant John McGrath, younger brother of Noel, kicked a pass to All Star John ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer and the Killenaule man buried a low shot into the bottom corner. After Séamus Callanan tagged on a free, the Drom & Inch hitman added a cheeky goal, deftly flicking the sliotar past Colm Callanan.
That score sent Tipp ten points clear – 2-15 to 0-10 – and the Premier County looked home and hosed. But Galway, winners over Clare in the opening round, were playing with the aid of a strong breeze blowing towards the Town End and points from Iarla Tannian and Joseph Cooney reduced the deficit to eight.
Jason Forde pushed Tipp nine points clear again but the remainder of the game, the hosts were outscored by 0-2 to 0-7, with Joseph Cooney impressive for Galway. The closest that the Westerners could get to their opponents was three points, however, and Tipp managed to keep the visitors at arm’s length. The first half was dominated for the most part by Tipp, with Kieran Bergin exceptional at midfield in difficult underfoot conditions.

Div IB: Limerick see off Antrim with late surge
ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION IB: ANTRIM 1-12 LIMERICK 0-23
Limerick’s hurlers got their first win of the 2015 Allianz League Division 1B campaign with a 0-23 to 1-12 win over Antrim at Ballycastle.
The visitors got off to the better start and led by 0-2 to 0-0 after four minutes with Paul Browne and Shane Dowling on target. By the 10th minute it was all square at 0-3 apiece, with Paul Shiels landing two sublime points, and when Mattie Donnelly pointed, the home side went into the lead for the first time.
The heavy conditions didn’t make for attractive hurling and referee John Keenan had to throw in the sliotar on a number of occasions after it became buried in the soft Ballycastle surface. Three unanswered scores had Limerick 0-6 to 0-4 to the good on the 20-minute mark, with Séamus Hickey making a foray upfield to land his side’s sixth point of the day.
Antrim battled back, restoring parity through Ciaran Johnston and Neal McAuley. There was a moment of controversy when the umpires waived Donal O’Grady’s 25th minute effort wide, but referee John Keenan overruled his officials to signal Limerick’s seventh score of the day. The sides went score for score until the short whistle, with a Shiels free levelling the sides for the sixth time; however Paul Browne’s second of the day on the stroke of half-time gave Limerick a 0-10 to 0-9 lead at half-time.
Within a minute of the restart, Antrim were back in the lead. Ciaran Clarke pulled the ball back to Eoghan Campbell after a mazy run to the end-line and the Cushendall clubman finished superbly past Nickie Quaid for a 1-9 to 0-10 lead. The Saffrons held the advantage for just five minutes. Condon, Browne and O’Grady pointed to level matters and Wayne McNamara completed an unanswered run of four points for the visitors. Limerick were beginning to find more space within the tight confines of the Ballycastle pitch and Condon added a brace to put three points between them.
Campbell and Shiels brought Antrim to within a point on the 54th minute, but that was as good as it got for the Ulstermen who failed to raise another flag for the remainder of the game. Dowling remained accurate from frees, while the impressive Cian Lynch tacked on his third of the day. Sub John Fitzgibbon became the 10th Limerick scorer in injury time.

Eamonn Kelly happy as Kerry win in a canter
By Mark Kennedy for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Wicklow 1-6 Kerry 2-20:
Kerry hurling manager Eamonn Kelly was happy with his side’s improvement as they ran out 17-point winners over Wicklow in Division 2A at Arklow. Having drawn with Derry in the opening round, the Kingdom upped their performance to the satisfaction of Kelly, who sees the league as valuable preparation for the Christy Ring Cup.
“We were very static in our performance against Derry the previous week and we worked on that during the week,” he said. “It is very tough to come to Arklow and get a result and I am very happy with this win,” he said.
It did not taken long for a physically stronger and fitter Kerry to get into their stride, opening up their opponents and punishing slack marking. Ace-free-taker Shane Nolan was on song as he fired over five points, three from frees and another from a 65, while centre-forward Sean Weir applied the clinical finish to a searing run by Mikey Boyle to crash to the net and give his team a 1-8 to 0-2 lead at half-time.
With a gusting wind behind them, Wicklow looked as if they might stage a fightback in the second half as Anto Byrne goaled from close range and Jonathan O’Neill followed up with a point from a free – cutting the gap to five points in the space of five minutes. But the recovery evaporated as Kerry hit back immediately for an answering second goal by Weir.
To add to Wicklow’s woes, they were reduced to 13 players in that second half as forwards Mikey Lee and Diarmuid Masterson were both sent off on the back of second yellow cards.
Scorers for Kerry: S Nolan 0-7 (five frees, one 65), S Weir 2-1, M Boyle, M O’Leary, P Boyle 0-2 each, K Carmody, P Lucid, J Griffin, C Harty, J Flaherty, B O’Leary.

Thurles CBS take Harty Cup title number 8
Thurles CBS (Tipperary) 2-12 St Francis College, Rochestown (Cork) 1-12
Report from the Irish Examiner newspaper
Thurles CBS finished with a flourish to claim Dr Harty Cup glory for an eighth time in Mallow this afternoon. Trailing by a point with 11 minutes remaining, Thurles landed four in a row down the home straight to capture the coveted silverware for the first time since 2009.
The dream dual double died for Rochestown as the Corn Uí Mhuirí finalists were foiled in their first Harty decider. Despite playing against the breeze in the second half, Rochestown still managed to rally from four points down at half-time to draw level by the 44th minute. And with eleven minutes remaining, Rochestown were a point clear when their leading scorer, Ciaran Cormack, landed a free to establish a 1-12 to 2-8 lead.
But Thurles, inspired by midfielder Billy McCarthy, were strong down the home straight and the Thurles Sarsfields dynamo landed two crucial points to put the winners a point ahead again. Kevin Duggan and Michael Connors added further scores for Thurles as they came on strong just when it was needed most to settle a tie that had been level five times.
Thurles lost Niall Heffernan to a second yellow card at the death but they had done enough by then. First half goals from Kevin Duggan and McCarthy were crucial to this latest Harty success for Thurles, who led by 2-7 to 1-6 at the midway point. After Cormack scorched through for a sensational tenth minute goal for Rochestown, Duggan netted in the 16th minute before McCarthy struck on the stroke of half-time.
Shane Kingston was excellent in that first half for Rochestown, collecting three points from play, but the Douglas starlet had a good goal chance saved by William Tierney with 13 minutes left, at a time when Rochestown were a point down. Robbie Long, lively throughout, could have netted for Thurles five minutes before the break but his shot drew a fine save from Andrew Cullinane, before Long followed up to point the rebound.
Scorers for Thurles CBS: B McCarthy 1-2, K Duggan 1-1, N Heffernan 0-4f, R Long 0-2, P Kennedy, R Teehan & M Connors 0-1 each.
Scorers for Rochestown: C Cormack 1-6 (0-5f), S Kingston 0-4, S Powter and D Meaney 0-1 each.

Thurles steel finally breaks Rochestown resistance to win Harty Cup
By Bob Lester for the Irish Examiner newspaper
St Francis College, Rochestown 1-12 Thurles CBS 2-12: Harty Cups are earned more than won, and there was certainly nothing easy about Thurles CBS’s victory over a battling St Francis College, Rochestown side in Mallow on Saturday.
On a biting cold afternoon for hurling, Thurles really had to grind out this final win — their eighth in all — and they can thank their lively forward division for this sweet success, their first since 2009, one that looked unlikely for much of the contest.
All their front men hit the target, as well as late substitute Michael Connors, while, for the most part, Rochestown were too reliant on Ciarán Cormack and Shane Kingston (1-10 between them) for scores. Indeed had Kingston put away a gilt-edged chance in the 46th minute — his shot brilliantly saved by Thurles keeper William Tierney — it might have been a different outcome.
Thurles finished both halves with skill and aplomb in the face of strong St Francis College play and it was this toil and effort that gave them the authority to lift the famed trophy. Yet Rochestown started so brightly, Sean Powter and Kingston quickly putting them two points clear. Niall Heffernan, with a free, and Paul Kennedy did level it up, but it was Rochestown, with the aid of the cutting breeze, who were looking sharper, with Darragh Kelleher and David Griffin strong in the half-back line.
And then a great Rochestown goal in the ninth minute, Kingston finding Cormack with an awkward ball, but, with a lot to do, the big Blackrock man showed great skill in controlling the sliotar before firing a belter past Thurles keeper Tierney. Rochestown were in control now and led 1-4 to 0-4 after a lively opening quarter.
Then they were hit for six, sloppy defending by the normally reliable John Cashman saw Ronan Teehan find Kevin Duggan in space and the centre-forward gave Andrew Cullinane no chance to level things up. Undeterred, Rochestown battled back with points from Kingston and Cormack but could not maintain the momentum as Thurles hit them hard in the closing six minutes of the half.
First, tasty full-forward Robbie Long missed a sitter, but did redeem himself with a point when the play broke. Niall Heffernan followed with a free and they led for the first time, in the 27th minute, with another fine point from Long. And then a real sucker punch for Rochestown in the 29th minute, again due to sloppy defending, corner-forward Teehan again the provider, setting up Billy McCarthy for a goal which earned Thurles a 2-7 to 1-6 interval lead.
Rochestown restarted with Daniel Meaney partnering Cathal Moloney at midfield, with Meaney playing deep and doing a fine job on the excellent Billy McCarthy at wing forward, who was a colossus for Thurles CBS, finishing with 1-2. But again Rochestown took up the running, and with quick, forceful hurling, they were level by 43rd minute with a couple of points from Cormack and one apiece from Kingston and Meaney.
But it was Thurles who led 2-8 to 1-10 entering the final quarter when Niall Heffernan, who was sent off for a second yellow offence late in the contest, converted his fourth free. All to play for now, but the portents weren’t great when Kingston was denied that goal chance. Two more Cormack frees did put high octane Rochestown back in front but they could not sustain the impetus, as Thurles found another gear.
With fine displays in defence from Dillon Quirke, Tom Hayes and Jack Skehan, Thurles upped the ante again. First Niall Heffernan to McCarthy, a cracking point, then another gem from the Thurles Sars man, followed by points from Kevin Duggan and sub Michael Connors and Rochestown were dead.
Thurles, with deadly assaults in the final minutes of both halves, had broken Rochestown hearts and the Cork lads will now have to pick themselves up for another final assault next Saturday, this time with the big ball in the Corn Uí Mhuirí decider against Pobalscoil Chorcha Dhuibhne at the Dr Crokes’ pitch in Killarney.
Scorers for Thurles CBS: B. McCarthy 1-2, K. Duggan 1-1, N. Heffernan 0-4 (frees), R. Long 0-2, P. Kennedy, R. Teehan and M. Connors 0-1 each.
Scorers for Rochestown College: C. Cormack 1-6 (0-5 frees), S. Kingston 0-4, M Powter and D. Meaney 0-1 each.

Cork kick-start their season with impressive win over Clare
Ian O’Riordan at Páirc Uí Rinn for the Irish Times newspaper
Cork 1-24 Clare 0-17
Two games, two defeats, and so Clare are still chasing their first points as the Allianz League already approaches the halfway mark. After a neatly entertaining night of hurling at Páirc Uí Rinn there was no denying Cork this time – they didn’t exactly show up here at full throttle against Kilkenny last week – but clearly raised their game and their spirit on this occasion, winning comfortably by 10 points in the end.
An excellent 0-14 from Patrick Horgan, plus a first half goal from Luke O’Farrell, helped make sure of it for the home team as they first surged in front towards the end of the first half. Horgan, Conor Lehane and the superb Alan Cadogan all racked up points to contribute to the scoring tally, but it was in truth a complete team effort – not forgetting some typically inspired goalkeeping from Anthony Nash.
There was plenty of bite and quality scoring from both teams early in the game, on what was actually an ideal night for hurling. Aidan Walsh was restored to midfield with great effect for Cork, and with eight different scorers in total they were worthy winners.
Neither team lacked motivation: Cork were outplayed by Kilkenny here last Saturday night, beaten by two points on the board, and in almost every position on the field. It was a game Cork never once looked like winning.
Clare endured a slightly less shaky start against Galway, surrendering the late match-winning goal, having put themselves in a winning position on several occasions. The sides were level five times in the first half, although with Clare getting their noses in front first, thanks to the placed-ball accuracy of Colin Ryan, and fine points from Bobby Duggan and John Conlon.
Cork’s levelled up regularly thanks to their own accuracy of Patrick Horgan, and equally deft points from play from Alan Cadogan and Conor Lehane. Against that backdrop they were level footing on 0-6 apiece, before Clare opened up again with three points without reply – the best coming from midfielder Brendan Buglar.
Still Cork were more threatening when running at goal, and indeed the goal came on 22 minutes when Seamus Harnedy set up Luke O’Farrell, and while his initial shot was well saved by Patrick Kelly, O’Farrell duly buried the rebound – and with that it was all square again. Only this time Cork kicked on, firing over five points without reply, the best of those coming from Daniel Kearney and wing back Cormac Murphy – and Horgan could have added their second goal, only for his scintillating shot to speed past the face of the goal and spin just wide.
Ryan got one back for Clare, and Patrick O’Connor too, but Cork were still the goal to the good at the break 1-12 to 0-12 – building on that in the second half to duly earn their first points of the Allianz League.
