Allianz HL Div 1A: Improving Dublin triumph

Eight points from Donal Burke underpinned an excellent Dublin performance as they claimed their first Allianz HL Division 1A points with victory over Cork at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday night.

While the visitors conceded four of the first five points as Cork looked to have continued the form which saw them beat Clare in their opening game, the Dubs – heavily beaten by Tipperary in their previous outing – managed to reel off 1-8 without reply to move into a lead they would not lose.

Ryan O’Dwyer’s goal put them 1-2 to 0-4 in front before Burke got on the scoresheet, scoring twice in quick succession. The full-forward could have pushed Ger Cunningham’s side further in front on 26 minutes when O’Dwyer was fouled by Damien Cahalane under a dropping ball for a penalty, but Anthony Nash repelled his effort.

Burke did convert the resultant 65, but Cork seemed to have given themselves a foothold once more as Shane Kingston netted from Luke Meade’s pass and then added two points to cut the lead to three.

Eoghan Conroy’s point in injury time put Dublin 1-11 to 1-7 in front and, after Cork reduced the margin on the resumption, it was Conroy who scored their second goal on 41 after Burke’s low ball across found him.

Further points from Burke, O’Dwyer, sub Chris Bennett and Eamon Dillon left it 2-16 to 1-10 after 53, though they did suffer a blow as wing-back Chris Crummey was sent off for a second yellow card, just as he had been when the counties met in the championship last July.

Cork couldn’t make the manpower advantage count, though, as the last six points of the game were shared with Dublin finishing strongly.
