Waterford Crystal Cup semi-final: CLARE 0-20 CORK 2-11
Late points from Colin Ryan and Cathal O’Connell helped Clare edge past Cork in the Waterford Crystal Cup semi-final at Sixmilebridge last night. It was a game largely unseen by many of those intending to attend it, however, as a fuel spill on the Limerick-Galway road caused a huge traffic jam from just beyond the toll plaza, with Cork players and supporters caught in the gridlock. As a result, the game’s start was put back from its intended slot of 7.45pm to 8.15pm and then 8.30pm. The pre-match situation for the Rebels was more akin to the lead-in to a junior B league game rather than an intercounty clash, with playing resources arriving at various times and many in different cars. Ultimately, they started with six changes from the announced side, as Conor O’Sullivan, Daniel Kearney, Cian McCarthy, Adrian Mannix and Stephen Moylan were travelling together, while Colm Spillane was sick. Given that the exclusion of one goalkeeper from the Cork panel had taken much of the attention, it added a layer of humour that William McCarthy, named as back-up to Anthony Nash here, started the game at corner-forward, before Mannix replaced him after his belated arrival.
Despite the upheaval, a free from Patrick Horgan gave Cork the game’s opening score, but after an even start Clare pulled three clear at 0-5 to 0-2 by the 24th minute, the free-taking of midfielder Nicky O’Connell helping them while corner-forward Shane O’Donnell was also asking questions of the visitors’ defence. Horgan had three of Cork’s opening-half scores, but corner-back Donal O’Donovan epitomised the strength of the Clare defence and at half time the home side led by 0-10 to 0-7.
The minute-hand on the clock was closer to 10pm than 9pm when the second half started, and Mannix gave Cork hope when he rounded off a great move involving Horgan and Cian McCarthy in the 44th minute to cut the gap, 0-14 to 1-8. After Horgan and Colin Ryan exchanged points, Horgan’s shot tipped over by Donal Tuohy, Mannix then pulled a loose ball to the net to tie at 0-15 to 2-9. Ultimately, though, Clare had the stronger finish as they progressed.

Waterford Crystal Cup Senior Hurling – Odds and Ends
35 goals were scored in the 2012 Waterford Crystal Cup competition over 11 matches (an average of 3.2 goals per match). Match Preview
When the quarter final draw was made the anticipation was that these two sides would advance and set up this truly mouth-watering clash, that will see some of the best young hurlers in the province battle it out. Dungarvan Colleges continued their impressive form in overcoming close rivals Blackwater CS in the last round. On a day that was not conducive to fast and flowing hurling, those in attendance were impressed by their battling qualities and ability to take scores at decisive times. The performance of Patrick Curran was central to Dungarvan Colleges victory as he notched an impressive tally of 0-8.
To date Thurles CBS have progressed in a straight forward manner with the minimum of fuss. They have been the most consistent team in the competition and continued in this manner with a complete display of hurling against Castletroy College in the quarter final. Thurles had their own scoring ace in Conor Lanigan who accounted for 0-9 of his sides’ 2-23 total. This fixture promises to be a truly titanic struggle between two teams that are considered joint favorites to lift the Harty Cup, a game that will match any fixture in any code over the weekend.

Our Lady’s Templemore and Ardscoil Rís Limerick played out a draw (0-14 to 1-11) in the Dr. Harty Cup Semi-Final on Sunday at MacDonagh Park Nenagh. The replay has been fixed for Saturday February 9th at 2:30pm in Nenagh.
Match Preview
Ardscoil Rís will not underestimate their Tipperary opposition in what should be an extremely tight game. Templemore have displayed a true fighting spirit to advance this far and this was in evidence in the victory over Midleton CBS in the last round. In atrocious conditions, Brian Kennedy was the match-winner for Our Lady’s Templemore as his late point secured them a 2-5 to 0-10 success. Last year’s All-Ireland minor winner John McGrath is the driving force behind this team that combines sublime hurling with a strong physical presence. Ardscoil Rís, champions in 2010 and 2011, reached the last four for the fifth successive year with a 0-14 to 1-6 win over Doon CBS. Ronan Lynch and Michael Casey have been very effective in a half back line that is proving to be the foundation of this team. This game should go right to the wire, as a tight and tense encounter is expected.

A goal two minutes from time from sub Michael Heffernan helped Tipperary reach a second successive Waterford Crystal Cup final after defeating Limerick IT in yesterday’s semi-final at Dolla. Backed by a strong wind, the holders opened up a 10-point lead at half time but were made to endure a nervy finish when Gary Guilfoyle’s second goal reduced the margin to two — but Heffernan’s strike set up a final meeting with Clare next weekend. After an even first 10 minutes, Tipperary — with six debutants — went on to score 11 points without reply with man-of-the-match John O’Dwyer leading the way, scoring five and setting up three more. John O’Neill and Jason Forde also chipped in with five points from play between them with Shane McGrath, John O’Brien, Joey McLoughney and corner back Christy Coughlan were also on target.
The hosts led 0-13 to 0-3 at the break with all LIT’s scores coming from Guilfoyle frees and it took until the 43rd minute for the students to register from play, again through Guilfoyle. Gary Guilfoyle blasted a 20-metre free to the net in the 49th minute and when the same player deflected a John Guilfoyle shot past Darren Gleeson to reduce the margin to two points it looked like a shock was on the cards but sub Heffernan eased any possibility of same a minute later with a goal of his own.

35 goals were scored in the 2012 Waterford Crystal Cup competition over 11 matches (an average of 3.2 goals per match). This contrasts with 23 goals in the 2011 competition over 10 matches (an average of 2.3 goals per match). In the first eight matches in the 2013 competition, there were 28 goals scored (an average of 3.5 goals per match)

Last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists, Mayo, made the perfect start to the new season, and their 2013 Allianz Football League Division I campaign, by beating a very disappointing Kerry side at Elvery’s MacHale Park on Sunday. Although Kerry were short a number of high-profile names due to injury and Dr. Crokes’ involvement in the All-Ireland Club Championship, much was still expected of the Kingdom in Éamonn Fitzmaurice’s first game in charge. However, the new manager will be gravely disappointed by his side’s performance, especially in the second half when Kerry failed to register a single score. It’s a damning statistic that looks even worse when you consider the visitors’ final point of the game came from the boot of Conor Cox before the half hour mark, the youngster giving his side a 1-6 to 0-7 lead after James O’Donoghue’s 17th minute goal had helped peg Mayo back after the Westerners made by far the better start. Mayo fought back before half-time, with points from Jason Doherty, who scored 0-5 in the first half alone, and Kevin McLoughlin leveling matters at the break, 0-9 to 1-6.
Although Kerry did have to face into a reasonably stiff breeze in the second half, their failure to register another score was down to far more than just the elements. Anthony Maher’s dismissal for a second yellow card on 49 minutes didn’t help, but Kerry were already in big trouble at that stage. Kerry dug in and 16 untidy minutes’ play elapsed before Mayo began to press home their numerical advantage. Michael Conroy fired over his third of the afternoon to end the stalemate, while Enda Varley came off the bench to light up the Mayo attack in the closing stages. Varley boosted his hopes of more permanent inclusion in the Mayo team with two late points that helped the home side to a deserved victory, and to two Allianz League points. It was a very disappointing performance from a young Kerry outfit unable to call on the experience of Colm Cooper, Tomás Ó Sé and Kieran Donaghy. With Dublin the visitors to Killarney next Sunday, things won’t get any easier for the Kingdom in Round 2.

The annals of Kerry football were consulted in MacHale Park late yesterday afternoon to track down the last time their senior team went a half of competitive football without scoring. The search is continuing this morning. What’s concrete is that this was one of the poorest performances by a Kerry team since their All-Ireland semi-final loss to Meath in 2001. In total, they went close to 43 minutes without raising either flag, Conor Cox’s 31st minute point, which had then put the visitors two points ahead.
Kerry aren’t the first team not to score in a second half of a league game in Castlebar. Such was the verbal abuse he received, Tomás Quinn was forced to change his phone number after a day to forget nine years ago this month when Dublin went the 35-plus minutes scoreless. But this being Kerry, the general view of Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s early reign will be scrutinised more keenly after this setback. And that’s exactly what it was. At the same time, maybe there will be a tad more sympathy for him and his management too. Kerry, at full strength, are a force but beyond their strongest 15 lies the problem, as was so acutely emphasised yesterday.
Fitzmaurice wasn’t going to question the faith he has in his young players, certainly not after one defeat, no matter how galling it was, but in hindsight it was a second rate Tipperary team Kerry had beaten in the previous weekend’s McGrath Cup final. Having two clubs involved in All-Ireland series mightn’t affect a bottomless pool like Dublin’s but on top of injuries Kerry suffer without the likes of Messrs Cooper, Donaghy and Galvin. What about Mayo? In recent weeks, James Horan has complained about the lack of credit dished out to his team.
If most of the attention is focused on Kerry this morning, he can have no qualms. Mayo weren’t super yesterday, just adequate, in inflicting a third consecutive defeat over their All-Ireland jinxes in front of the 7,124 crowd. Up until the 63rd minute, Kerry were still in the game at least on the scoreboard, trailing 1-6 to 0-12, before Kevin McLoughlin and a brace from Enda Varley extended Mayo’s lead to six. No, this was a defeat all of Kerry’s own making. All they could muster in the second half was two shots past David Clarke’s dead-ball line, the latter an awful effort from a Bryan Sheehan free.
Let’s not forget either that they had only two points to Mayo’s four by the 17th minute, despite a more than generous breeze at their backs. Having returned to collective training over four weeks ahead of Mayo, Fitzmaurice was only right not to blame fitness as an issue following the game. Mayo’s full-forward line were spoilt by the amount of ball that came their way against the wind and the home side should have gone in at the break better than on level terms, 0-9 to 1-6.
As a spectacle, there wasn’t much to write about this affair either. If Kerry’s scoreless gap was yawning, Mayo contributed to the drabness by going 16 minutes without a point in the second half despite the favour of the wind. There was also enough cynicism to go around but referee Padraig Hughes’ constant whistling did stagnate the flow of the game. Anthony Maher was shown to the line for a second yellow card offence in the 50th minute after becoming entangled with Aidan O’Shea, who was the stand-out midfielder on the afternoon. Although four of his six backs picked up yellow cards, Horan could be pleased with his team’s discipline, the defence conceding just two frees in scoring areas which were both missed.
He was also satisfied with how his team began the game against the wind, James O’Donoghue’s slip through Shane McHale and Tom Cunniffe for Kerry’s goal the only real blot on their copybook. “We started the game well and showed good intent and got some good scores early on,” said Horan. “We conceded a few soft goal chances and Kerry took one quite well but we responded and kept plugging away so I’m happy with a lot.”
Despite an experimental FBD Connacht League campaign and only a month’s worth of work done, Horan was confident his team would put together a display. “I had a strong feeling we’d do well today but you never know until you play. We had a good meeting yesterday and went through a few things. That was talking about it — you have to go and do it but we did today so I’d be happy.”

Jack Sherwood who makes his League debut is a member of the Firies Club. He is the holder of 2 Munster Minor Championship medals with Kerry (2008, 2009) and was on the Kerry Under 21 team defeated by Cork in 2012. He won a Junior All Ireland title with Kerry in 2012. He is the first player from his Club to play with Kerry since Donal Daly and is a first cousin of his team mate Peter Crowley.
Michael O’Donoghue who makes his League debut is a member of the Spa Club Killarney. He is the holder of All Ireland medals with Kerry at Under 21 and Junior level and has a Munster Minor and 3 Munster Junior medals as well as a Munster Intermediate Club medal won with Spa. He was Munster GAA U21 Footballer of the Year in 2008 and Munster GAA Junior Footballer of the Year in 2010. He holds 3 Munster Colleges Corn Uí Mhuirí medals. Affectionately known as “Stam” to one and all, he is a nephew of former Kerry and Spa player Mick Gleeson.

With Clare having dominated the opening half and gone in at the break leading 0-7 to 0-5, this game at Miltown Malbay turned when Waterford corner-forward Darren Guiry fired home the only goal in the 49th minute. With 10 minutes to go to the break, Waterford edged in front with a Paul Whyte point, but three unanswered Clare scores from Daivd Tubridy (2) and Martin McMahon ensured a two-point half-time advantage.
Waterford came thundering back, however, as points from Robert Aherne (2) and Whyte drew them level before Guiry’s goal. Clare did have their chances, but five wides in the final nine minutes from the Clare attack prompted manager Mick O’Dwyer to remark “when you don’t take your chances you’re not entitled to win.” Tubridy did have a chance to level at the death but his free from the sideline on the ’45’ sailed wide of the posts.

Darren Guiry’s goal was the difference as Waterford opened up with a win against Clare in Division IV. Both sides went into the game with new managers at very different ends of the experience spectrum, Mick O’Dwyer with Clare and Niall Carew with Waterford.
It was the younger man who presided over the opening round win though, with Guiry’s second half goal settling what had been a very close match to that point. Clare led 0-7 to 0-5 at the break, and then scored the first point after the restart, but three Waterford points took them level before Guiry grabbed the key score.
